From start to finish, this entire image was painted, using only three layers, in Photoshop CS3, using my Wacom A5 Bamboo Tablet. It took about a weeks worth of hours to complete, and I am terribly pleased with it!

I DISCOVERED DOTEE DOLLS, YO

XD These are little Dotee Dolls - little decorative plushie dolls - each one was made for a specific friend and will soon be winging their way around the world!

Red/Orange is going to South Africa
Blue/Gold is going to Louisianna
Green is staying here in the UK but going up north
Purple is goingto Canada

They're about 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches and take abouta day each to make - unless I'm distracted by something, and then they take longer XD

Here they are individually!

I DISCOVERED PLUSHIE MAKING, YO

Yah, so about three days of work and I have my very own plush owl XD It's 5 inches from base to ear-tip and 4 inches wide - it's so damn cute XD

I didn't wieght it, so it doesn't stand up, but I don't care too much, it's extra cuddly and soft and I like to poke it's belly...

XD

I'm planning to make bigger and better stuffed toys, now that I know how!

Wow - it's been a long while hasn't it? o.o

This was a birthday present in May 2009 - can't believe I never posted it! It features Becca-An and Willem from my original story - the characters are based on my best friend and her fiance's characters, and they were the recipients of the gift.

This was hand drawn/inked, scanned, cleaned and then digitally painted in PSCS3 with far too many layers. Took forever, but I'm still very pleased with how it's come out!

And here we have a couple of digital paintings I'm working on - and getting frustrated with XD

Previous viewers may recognise this loligoth girl. Toshiko Minimari! She's an OC of mine - I started out wanting to draw this in my usual illustrative style - but after some persuasion from a friend, went down the painting route instead. It's going well so far, and I'm rather pleased with her!

This is a more recent one, started only a week or so ago. I'm not entriely sure whether I like it. Her face is pissing me off something chronic. I may just delete her head entirely and start it from scratch.

Both images are being painted in PhotoshopCS3 with so many layers I decded not to count them.

A series of digital illustrations

The first three I am not terribly happy with, and may re-draw at some point. The fourth one needs a bit of work, but overall, I like it - the last three I adore. And yes, that library scene is of two blokes kissing.

All drawn using my bamboo tablet, straight into PhotoShopCS3, about an average of two and a half hours on each image.

Sketchbook - page fifteen, sixteen and seventeen

Three more sketch pages, this time filled during a day out first to the Tank Museum and then to Lulworth Cove, both in the south of England. I only had a pencil, eraser, black fine line and warm gray+1 tria marker with me - hence the style.

Two exhibits at the Tank Museum - the left imge is part of a 'walk through' experience, where you get to see up close and personal (albiet in a very sanitised fashion) what the Trenches were like in WW1. This particular exhibit is a man huddled into a small dugout, clutching at his hair and weeping. It's kinda creepy and rather upsetting to view - even though you know it's a manaquin and tape-recording...

The right image is a very quick, rough, pencil sketch of a 'Baby Gas Mask' - an all body suit that you placed baby in and hand pumped filtered air into. Apaprently it was never actually used, but during trials, it had a tendancy to send babies to sleep (probably due to carbon-dioxide build-up in the suit itself.)

I found both these exhibits intriguing, so I sketched them.

This is a page that I started in the museum - sketching visitors and children - and finished off at Lulworth Cove later in the day, sketching families at the beach.

This last is the view from my spot on the beach at Lulworth Cove. (I say beach, by the way, but it was really just a big, huge, long pile of pebbles of varying sizes >> Lulworth is NOT a good place to go wearing sandles...)

One of my favorite things about Lulworth Cove is the cliffs - they are cleared of any over-lying soil or grass, so you can actually see the rock. Lulworth's cliffs are the best examples I have ever seen (literally, with my own eyes) of the folding of the Earth's crust.

You can sit there and litterally see time on those cliffs, from the way it is folded and rippled. It's bloody gorgeous.

Sketchbook - Page twelve and thirteen

These two pages were filled while at Bromham-On-Sea, during a very british day to the sea-side (in this case, the tail end of an estuary, rather than the actual sea - but close enough)

The top page are all of the same family, playing in the sand, flying kites and so on - quite amused by the baby boy sitting fully clothed in the wet sand, picking up handfuls of muddy-sand XD Also a dead crab I found in a pool! I love drawing crabs.

The bottom was an attempt at sketching the donkey/mule riding stand. Apparently I fail at mules and donkeys XD and fail even more at trucks XD

All in pencil, fine-line pen and shades added with warm gray+1 Tria marker.

These two pages were drawn while tending a carboot sale - all the people shown were random customers who either stopped at my stall or who looked interesting to draw but were standing further down the line of stalls.

Very, very quick sketches - no more than about twenty seconds each. Fine-lin pen straight into the sketchbook.

Started a new project, with the specific intention of making prints to sell at the local craft fair that's held every month.

I'm not sure I like this one, at all. Too.. girly? Mom said it looks like something a twelve-year-old would paint, and I find I agree.

Sketchbook - page four 'Elegance'

Here's the page I did Wednesday. And, I was so pleased with it, I cropped it and framed it c.c

About 4 hours.

Acrylic ( treated like watercolours at first - layered on - and then painted thickly, with plenty of finger-smudging ) on brown paper. A little light shading with a Derwent Drawing Terracotta artists pencil was applied to the left side of the image after the paint had dried.

The background colours were applied Tuesday night, using various ' Pretty Colour ' pigment stamp pads and left to dry overnight.

The Kanji reads: 'Yuuga' ( Elegance )

Considering I haven't painted in over three years, I am damn pleased with this.

I've known BSL Fingerspelling since I was about 12, (and I'm in the process of self-learning the wider BSL) and all this talk about Braille (and the project idea I am now working on) got me wondering about incorporating BSL into the project somehow, as well...

So, for my hand studies, I decided to use fingerspelling images as refs (I even looked up the American version and doodled those as well) - so you have my name in Braille and Fingerspelling on this page XD As well as the Braille alphabet at top-right (which is 'bumpy' - like 'real').

Oh - the pink squares? For some reason, the scanner picked them up as white, so I put the pink back in, using photoshop.

Fresh Sketchbook - Nude Ladies

Opened a new sketchbook today, for to work on my portfolio. This is the first page ^^

Drawn from photographic references in mixed-media (markers, pencils, tipex/white-out, biros, felt-pens and ball-point gel-pens).

I can't keep my fingers off the white-dots on the black hair. It feels like brail and makes me want to do some hands-on art, using real brail, on purpose for people to touch...

This is going out to a woman in Spain, and I hope she likes it ^^

Textured card for the base, gorgeous green paper - two different types, hand drawn, inked and coloured Platypus on brown paper - torn to fit, detailing added with glitter-gel pens and a small gold corner detail sticker ^^

I enjoyed drawing the platypus - I've never drawn one before, it was a fun experience XD

Two bookmarks for the 'Gothic and Sweet Lolita Bookmarks' swap on Swap-Bot.

The girl I was making these for, doesn't like pink or hearts... which is pretty much the definition of Sweet Lolita... So, the Sweet one is creams, peaches and oranges, and note the distinct lack of hearts. Seriously, that one drove me mad.

I used many papers, many card, paper flowers, three types of lace, five types of ribbon, four brown buttons and ink pads to edge the bookmarks before sticking anything to them - oh, and a rose stamp for the backs.

I'm actually rather pleased with these, and I'm beginning to wonder whether I can SELL this type of thing c.c

What do you guys think? Considering the amount of work I put into them (and sometimes the kinda crap I get in return) what would you think of BUYING personalised hand-crafted bookmarks?

This is also an attempt to loosen up - my drawing can get a bit anal sometimes, so I want to practice being freer with my work.

Top: My Valentine Tag for the UKScappers Valentine Tag Swap ^^ Quite proud of that - got covered in pink dye while making it XD

Middle: Three bookmarks - the left one was for the Darwin Day Bookmark Swap on Swap-Bot - again, quite proud of that one ^^ The two pink ones were for a Loligoth Valentine Bookmark Swap also on Swap-Bot - again, very proud of those.

Very dissapointed with the bookmarks I recieved though - two horrible slips of thin paper, not even cut properly, with simple pencil doodles on them >>

Bottom: An ATC for the Severus Snape ATC swap on Swap-Bot - I think it's a couple months old now. I was very pleased with it actually, though I look at it now and think it's a little silly o0

Harry Potter fanart: 'Close Ties'

Interpret this image any way you like ^^

I haven't drawn anyone from Potter for a long time, so when I got inspiration (from this photo) I had to draw them.

I then used the image to see how the new tablet works ^^

I'm DAMN pleased with this, I think it's turned out really well ^^

The background is sort of haphazard, but I rather like it XD

Took around 6 to 8 hours in photoshop. Original pencils took about two hours, inking about a half hour. Download for full view.

Mermaid Booklet

Whoo. This took about a month to make c.c

Details: Swapbot

You will take 9 pieces of sturdy paper. They have to be something between the size of an ATC and a postcard. Then you will decorate each paper on BOTH sides - the theme is Mermaids (and Mermen!). You can use anything you like, nice papers, fabrics, embellishments, ribbons, let your imagination go wild! And definitely don't just slap on a sticker! The sides of the papers don't have to be straight - they can be cut, ripped, etc. whatever will fit your artsy mermaid cards!

Once you're done with decorating you will cut a small hole into the LEFT UPPER side of every card, maybe secure it with something or pull a small ring through it and THEN you'll put all the cards onto a keyring. You can always add more decoration onto the keyring as well, like some ribbons or pendants - you don't have to though. --> UPDATE: If you have ideas for another kind of binding that will result in a neat booklet, that's ok. Just make sure you create a booklet, self-made. :)

As you may be able to see from the top photograph, I secured my pages to a ring ^^ I then added a lovely green ribbon and two strings of beads - one small one with blue and green glass beads, another long one with sea shapes and my swap partners innitials.

Page 01: Entirely hand drawn. The card was coloured and stamped first, then I drew on to it and added mre colour and some embellishments.

Page 02: I used an image of a mermaid sitting on the shore, onto lovely swirly paper and added some beads and a green stamp and some gold stamps.

Page 03: Entirely hand drawn in graphite, added some swirls in glittery green gel pen and some crystals and added glitter for shimmery effects.

Page 04: I used an image of some mermaids befriending sailors and decorated it with shimmery fabric and glitter gel pens.

Page 05: Another mermaid image, this time decorated with a stamp, a fish shaped brad and some lovely medieval style fabric.

Page 06: I coloured the card with blues, purples and pinks, then added a shell image and decorated with crystals, a small mermaid doodle and the Kanji for 'mermaid'.

Page 07: A mermaid illustration on shimmery pink card, decorated with glitter gel pens, two stamps, some crystals, a gorgeous brad and a flower-shaped bead - the lace to the right is stuck between this page and the next.

Page 08: A lovely image stuck on glittery gold card and embellished with a brad and some paper flowers.

Page 09: A hand-drawn ATC loosely attached to a stamped card background - with fluffy threads and crystals to embellish the ATC.

Tastefully Nude ATCs

These four ATCs are for the Tastefully Nude Women ATC swap on SwapBot.

I hand drew each woman on plain computer-printer paper, inked them with fine-line architects pens, coloured them with Derwent Coloursofts, added some detailing with glitter-gel pens and then cut them out (painstakingly slowly, with both scissors and a scalple) and then stuck them down on the pink/purple ATC sized card. I added just a touch more glitter-gel pen detail to the card and then I was done ^^

I am inordinately pleased with these. Someone on the little forum-comment-box-thing on the swap page mentioned wanting something NON-Vintage, so I thought I'd do modern punk/goth for my cards.

Hopefully, whomever it is recieving these, likes them well enough ^^

ATC collections

I'm trying out ATCs again, so I thought I'd put up the ones I've done in the past ^^

Mermaids Collection - done for a ten person swap. I used water colours, acrylics, ball-point pen, glitter-gell-pens, tip-ex(white-out), paper cut-outs, stickers and bits of gorgeous wool.

Fairies Collection - done for a ten person swap. Not one of my best, unfortunately. I used various papers, water-colours, ball-point pen, pencils, stickers and strips of netting.

Chocolate Collection - done for a ten person swap. I rather enjoyed this one ^^ I used soft papers, stickers, a lovely fluffy string and pencils.

Two collectiosn featuring found images of women, using anything I had to hand. I quite like them both and still have them all in my folder.

Purple, Rust and Green - two doubles and a single I did using anything to hand. I still have these ones in my folder as well ^^

Angels - a swap I did with a young woman in France. I used tissue paper, acrylic paint, a glittery gell-sticker, a gorgeous ribbon, ball-point pen and glitter-gel pens. I'm quite proud of these ^^

Micheal Turner

Micheal Turner Passes Away at 37

I only just heard, but a great man has passed.

Micheal Turner - of Witch Blade, Fathom and Aspen fame - passed away ten days ago after a long battle with cancer.

Micheal Turner was the man, the artist, who got me into comics in the first place, his art was what inspired me to do it.

I know in the last year or so, I turned away from his work, but that doesn't change the fact that he was a huge inspiration to me, one of my biggest influences.

He was a brilliant artist and a brilliant writer.

He will surely be missed.

Poppies

I've been keeping an eye on the poppies in the garden the past couple of weeks, they're HUGE, about 8 - 10 inches from petal edge to petal edge.

I'm hoping they seed before we move, so I can take a head with me to the new garden.

Just thought I'd take some photographs to share. I also took a few other shots.

The only downside to taking the photos, is that I'm allergic to something in the garden and have now got a heyfever induced headache.

Little Matchstick Girl WIP

I need to practice backgrounds, city/landscapes and story telling in my images, so I'm giving it a go.

This image is titled 'Little MAtchstick Girl' and is based on that same story. It's currently in the Work In Progress stages - and as I move on with the painting, I'll update with new scans for you ^^

This is painted directly into Photoshop CS3, using the normal paintbrush at 70 and 40 % opacity - all on one layer.

Whisper Elmwood - Character sketch

This is Anna-Lu 'Whisper' Elmwood, the main character of the trilogy of novels that I am working on, titled 'The Empress of Nareku'.

This image exists only in cyberspace - as I drew it from start to finish in PSCS3. The following images show my work process.

I start off with three layers - the background, the black line work and the red linework. I always start with a nude form, to get the anatomy and pose correct, so that the clothing, once added, falls naturally and with the shape of the body in mind.

In actuality, this image is roughly 8 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Or 2480pxls x 3508pxls.

I then lower the opacity levels on the two line layers to 50% and create a new layer, leaving it at opacity 100%. This makes it easier to ink over the rough lines. As I work, I erase the now redundant linework underneath the inking, to lessen the confusion.

As I go, I try to keep the inking clean and simple, with little embelishment - and I try to add in the details as I find them. At this stage, I start to outline where the folds in the cloth should lie, according to the shape of the body underneath them and how gravity will affect the material.

Of course - I also allow for it being a 'dynamic' pose, which requires a bit of movement in the clothing.

Once I have completed the line-work, I completely delete the two rough-sketch layers, thus removing any trace of the initial rough sketching. I now have two layers - the background and the line work. To this, I then add the details that I missed during the original inking-stage.

At this stage, I also changed her expression slightly, to make it more welcoming.

The finished image is created by adding another layer, between the background and the lines, on 'multiply', on which I add the white, using the paint-tool at opacity level 40 and building up layers of colour to hint at lighting.

I'm not sure whether I'll colour this properly - it was a trial, to see how well I could do this using my new computer/tablet/PSCS3 system - apparently I can do it well XD

Terrible Twins

And now for something different c.c This was created using pen and ink and is A4 size IRL.

'Terrible Twins' is an illustration for a Doujin (fan-comic) project I'm working on. The two black haired boys are Yahiko (closest) and Sanosuke Uzumaki. The girl and the boy right in the back are Toshiko and Okita Subaku.

You may or may not have heard of the Japanese Manga 'Naruto' - this doujin is set in the Naruto universe and features the offspring of the canon characters.

This image took so long to do - but I'm very pleased with it! For a start I managed a fully detailed background, featuring architecture - something I have problems doing.

I'm in the middle of digitally colouring this at the moment.

Autumn

This was commissioned by an American client - her terms were 'a typical English setting, depicting Autumn' - so I took my friend Becca on a walk and made her pose for me at the abandoned Rail Station on our favorite walk.

This was created using pen and ink and took far too many hours to complete.

The worst part was when I went back to the area to do the last sketchwork, I discovered that the Local Council had fenced off the Station and cut down the trees! I had to complete the images from some reference photographs taken on a previous visit.

This was painted during the autumn months of 2007 and is the view from my office window.
Inspiring view, eh?

I was working on the outline for my business plan at the time - and halfway through, my brain basically shut down from all the numeracy - so I shut down Word and opened Photoshop and simply painted for the next four hours.

This is the result. I'm thinking of doing a Print run.
